He was the son of the late Jacob and Mary "Polly" (Guseman) Newman. Dr. Newman died at his home in Oakland, Garrett, Maryland on Saturday from an extended illness as a result of diabetes. He married Sarah Permelia Stewart on January 5th, 1862, at Monongalia County, Virginia. He was the father of two sons, William H. and Charles Jacob Newman, both residence of Oakland, Garrett, Maryland.
NOTE: The Birth shows West Virginia, but he was born in Virginia. (West Virginia Admitted to the Union, 20 June 1863).

During the war Dr. Newman was employed as a teamster, not being of age to enter the Army.
He was a graduate of the Physio-Medical Institute of Cincinnati, Ohio. One of the chief points in the medical system which he preferred and practiced was that all diseases be treated in a natural manner, hence he was an herb doctor, and had no faith in minerals as a medicine.(Known today as a Holistic Doctor)

He was a member of St Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church.
