Irene was born May 4, 1921, in the Town of Auburn (Fond du Lac County), to the late Alvin and Barbara (Hogue) Wichmann.
On Dec. 6, 1939, Irene married Godfrey "Fritz" Bierhals at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Sheboygan. He preceded her in death on July 15, 2005.
Irene was a member of the Krause-Simpson Post 300 of the Gillett American Legion Auxiliary.
Irene was known for her crafting, knitting, crocheting, needle point and her latest endeavor, jewelry making. She took pleasure in giving those items away. She was also a very avid reader.
Irene is survived by her children, Marjorie (Bud) Wolski, Novato, Calif.; James and Eileen, Rural Oconto Falls; Shirley Brokiewicz, Pulaski; Daniel, Green Bay; Carol (Wayne) Kopke, Rural Abrams; one sister, Lorraine Roos, Chattanooga, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Irene was also preceded in death by one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Joseph Werner; one grandson, Jason Bierhals; three brothers, Harold, Ralph, and Alfred Wichmann.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at the Kuehl Funeral Home, 108 E. Main St., Gillett, 920-855-2144, and then from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Funeral Services 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the funeral home, with the Rev. John Laatsch officiating. Interment in the Town of Morgan Cemetery.
