The family moved to L'Orignal the next year. He was very active in village life, serving on the Public and High School Boards; from 1882 until his death he was Secretary-Treasurer of the Village Council; for a time was Deputy-Sheriff and was a County Auditor.
He died in 1895 and his Obituary stated in part "Mr. Robert Hamilton, whose death occurred at L'Orignal on the 21st April was for a great number of years one of the most prominent and useful residents of the county. In the practice of his profession he came in contact with all classes of the residents of the county by whom he was universally respected and esteemed."
There is no headstone for the family plot.
