Chester Bryan Atchley, 87, of Greensburg, died at 9:35 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2011, at Decatur County Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Columbia, Kentucky, June 1, 1923, the son of Milton Bryan and Nellie B. Sullivan Atchley. He moved to Illinois for nine years then moved back to Kentucky in 1932, living in Burgin, Kentucky, from 1945 until 1953. He moved to Hartsville in 1953, to Westport in 1954, then to Letts in 1957.

Mr. Atchley retired in 1986 from Scripture Brothers Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge at Greensburg. He also had worked for Kocher Ford and Don Meyer Ford at Greensburg and Mahan Ford at Columbus.

He also served as pastor of Separate Baptist churches at Rodney, Haw Patch, Bloomington, Bethel and Holton and had been a member of the Central Indiana Association of Separate Baptist Churches since 1954.

He enjoyed working on cars, horses, watching and feeding birds and preaching the word of God.

He married Sarah Lou McQueary December 30, 1944, in Columbia, Kentucky.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Betty Lou Floyd of Martinsville, Indiana, Judy Gale (Jerry) Shoopman of Greensburg, Indiana, and Angela Sue (Rocky) Turley of Greensburg, Indiana; two sons, Gary Chester (Ruth) Atchley of Greensburg, Indiana, and Daniel Lee (Jan) Atchley of Greensburg, Indiana; two sisters, Opal Gentry of Westport, Indiana, and Lois Jean (Charles) Tichenor of Westport, Indiana; three brothers, Joseph Q. (Marty) Atchley of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dwayne D. (Vermalene) Atchley of Greensburg, Indiana, and Millard (Connie) Atchley of Westport, Indiana; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alma Eads; and a brother, Emmet Dale Atchley.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2011, at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home at Westport, with the Rev. Austin Ball and Pastor Jeff Floyd officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at Mount Aerie Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association through the funeral home.
