Nels emigrated with his parents at the age of 5 years old to Fergus Falls, Minnesota in 1881 along with his maternal grandfather, Lars Knutson. The family lived there for two years and then homesteaded in Nidaros Township next to Lake Clitherall, Minnesota. From all records, Nils never married. He farmed in Otter Tail County, MN. He was taught English as soon as possible. He was a member of the Nidaros Lutheran Church.
