The son of Paul Carrington and Emma Catherine Cabell Carrington was born at Gamble's Hill, home of his grandfather Robert Gamble. Married first to Mary Claiborne Coles Carrington and then Nannie Seddon Smith Carrington. He fathered ten children between them. A Confederate Officer and lawyer in Pittsylvania County, he was in charge of raising black troops at the end of the War. Postwar he practiced law in Richmond and served on the Board of Visiters at the University of Virginia. Carrington was president of the Richmond Bar Association. His war letters are at Duke University. He served with the 38th Virginia Infantry Regiment and was imprisoned at Libby after the evacuation of Richmond. He was an Episcopalian and Mason.
