1st. Lieutenant Baugher was a member of Company B, 45th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He was struck seven times by bullets while in command of his company at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee. He died of his wounds at a hospital in Quincy, Illinois. An Attorney, Nesbitt Baugher was a 1853 graduate of Pennsylvania College and was a newspaper editor in Galena, Illinois prior to his enlistment in the 45th Illinois Infantry in 1861. Lieutenant Baugher was the son of Dr. Henry L. Baugher, president of Pennsylvania College. His first initial was "D." Nesbitt was his middle name.

In 1860, he was a lawyer and editor living in Galena, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, and stood 5' 6" tall with brown hair and brown eyes. His wife's name was Martha. According to several postings on Ancestry.com, he was born September 22, 1836, which matches his stated age at enlistment of 24.

He enlisted in Galena August 30, 1861, and mustered into federal service (presumably also at Galena) November 20, 1861, although that may have been the date he mustered at the rank of 1st lieutenant.

His father gave the benediction that preceded the ceremony that culminated in Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
