DONALD JAMES TOTTEN, SR. March 19, 2013 - Donald J. "Poppy" Totten Sr., 91, of 6671 Mount Monroe Road, New Hudson, passed away Tuesday at Cuba Memorial Hospital's Skilled Nursing Facility after a lengthy illness. Born in Cuba on Aug. 7, 1921, he was a son of David and Matilda "Tillie" Swift Totten. On July 2, 1949, in Cuba, he married the former Jeanne B. Beyer, who predeceased him Oct. 3, 1986. Mr. Totten was a graduate of the Cuba Central School class of 1940 and Alfred Agricultural Technical School. Don was a dairy farmer his entire life, devoting his time to the Totten Shire Farm until the past several years. During the Cold War, he was a member of the Civil Defense. He was a former justice of the peace, member of the grievance board, assessor and census taker for the town of New Hudson. For many years, he enjoyed writing the Mount Monroe column in the Cuba Patriot, which helped depict his view of life from the top of Mount Monroe, often telling what the weather was like and what his neighbors and himself had been doing on a weekly basis. He was an avid hunter for many years and enjoyed storytelling and spending as much time as he could with family and friends. His other special interests included honey bees, producing maple syrup, tractors, baseball and farming. He was a longtime supporter and 60-plus-year member of the Allegany County Cooperative Extension, the Cuba Rod and Gun Club, the National Rifle Association and the Milk Producers Association. He had been a member of the Dairyman's League since 1946. Surviving are two sons, Mark Totten of California and Donald (Karen) Totten Jr. of Rochester; four daughters, Kathy (Kelsie Marea) Okay of Oregon, Joan (Robert) Amundson of South Carolina, Deborah (Mark) Haynes of Mexico and Denise (Loren) Luzier of New Hudson; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert Totten; and two sisters, Mary Anne Conklin Warren and Betty Newton. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home and Memorial Service Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday (March 22, 2013). The Rev. Larry A. Poelma, pastor the First Baptist Church of Cuba, will officiate. Memorials, if desired, may be sent to Bellville Cemetery Association, c/o Doug Donner, Woodruff Street, Cuba, NY 14727; or to the Allegany County Cancer Society.
