Peggy Araquistain - Ascuaga (1929 - 2011) Mom passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011, peacefully and comfortably with her family close by her side. Mom was born Jule Francis Alexander on April 11, 1929 to Robert Clyde and Gladys Iola Alexander at Bartonville, Illinois. Mom, or Peggy as she became known, was the fifth of eight children born to Grandpa Pappy and Grammy. In 1945, the family moved to Arizona where Mom continued her education, graduating from Phoenix Union High School.
In the early 1950's Mom's family moved to Idaho where they homesteaded ground north of Middleton, Idaho. After moving to the area, Mom met Pete Araquistain, who she married on April 17, 1953.
To this marriage, six children were born. Mom and Dad's marriage was filled with all the excitement you could have, being married to a Basco and raising five kids running around. Mom and Dad always liked to have us kids around the house with our friends. Between Mom's family and friends along with Dad's family and Basque friends, Pete and Peg came to have many lifelong friends with whom they shared good times, fishing and traveling. Some very fun and intriguing friendships were formed and all seemed to be focused around family and fishing, or so it seemed.
Mom took up many interests, but they didn't hold her interest as much as her fishing, gardening, and cooking did. Her father-in-law was a very good cook, as was Grammy, Mom's mother. Between the two of them, Mom became one of the best cooks around and was known as one of the better Basque cooks in the area. She was quick to prepare a dish for any family and friends that would drop in for a visit.
For many years, Mom worked part-time as a doctor's aid at the Family Medical Clinic, a job she loved as she not only got to meet so many of her good friends, but in the true form of our Mom, she helped take care of people -- something she was so very good at doing.
When Dad passed on in 1994, Mom continued working and taking care of her garden and did a bit of traveling. Sometime after Dad's passing; Mom and one of her and Dad's lifelong friends, Frank Ascuaga were married. They had many wonderful times together; traveling and fishing; Mom even went to Boise State Football games with Frank.
In her later years, Mom's life was filled with her kids and grandkids, her garden and her dogs, Clyde and Clydie. She continued to enjoy entertaining family and friends with her cooking; she also enjoyed watching football and golf on TV.
Mom was predeceased by her daughter Laura, husbands Pete and Frank; her mother Gladys and father, Clyde; stepfather Leon Johnson; her sister Gwen (Fred) Hoelscher, brothers Ralph (Whimpy), Charlie, Clyde (Deac), and Robert (Jack). She is survived by sisters Mary, Lou, and Joyce; brothers-in-law, Luis and Paul and sister-in-law, Melba; daughters Beth, Mary Kay, and stepdaughter, Rita; sons Craig, Mark (Theresa) and Tony; her grandchildren Emily (Justin) Stephens, Marti Araquistain, Jed and Levi Elsberry; several nieces, nephews; grandnieces and nephews; and her very special friends, Rosie Kadel and Judy McQueen. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Rita Ascuaga, Rosie Kadel, Aunt Mary Alexander, and Aunt Joyce Kelso.
Respecting Mom's wishes, a private family viewing and interment at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell was held for her. She also asked that a celebration of her life, be held for her friends and family at the Caldwell Elks Club, Wednesday afternoon, which was held Wednesday, January 12, 2011.
Mom wished that donations be made to the Basque Museum at 611 Grove St in Boise, ID 83702 or to the Euzkaldunak Charities at PO Box 258, Houston, ID 83630 or to the donor's favorite charity.
