He appeared on the Grand Old Opry stage, starred in 57 movies (mostly "B" westerns such as "Check Your Guns" and "The Tioga Kid"), wrote the songs "Hillbilly Heaven" and "One Has My Heart The Other Has My Name". He was the recipient of the CMA Pioneer Award, and has a star on the Palm Springs "Walk of Fame". He also was one of the founders and a past Vice President of the Academy of Country Music.
