James enlisted in the 41st Alabama Infantry in April 1862, was promoted to Corporal in February 1863. According to an application for a military headstone ordered by James' sister, Mrs. G. H. (Amanda Sophronia Farquhar) White, James died on April 21, 1864 and was a private in Company H of the 41st Alabama. The headstone was sent in March 1931 for a formerly unmarked grave.
