WALKER COUNTY, GA - Susie Lee Clarkson Leake, 98, longtime educator in the Walker County School System, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2010 in a local hospital.

Mrs. Leake was a native of Walker County, GA, born to the late Joseph Arthur and Elizabeth Clarkson, and was educated in the Walker County School System.

She received a degree in Vocational Home Economics from Georgia State College for Women and a graduate study at the University of Chattanooga, now U.T.C.

She developed the Home Economics curriculum and began the department in the Rossville High School and she spent 45 years teaching in both secondary and elementary levels.

Mrs. Leake also taught at Georgia State College for Women, and at U.T.C. as Assistant Professor of Economics.

She was extremely proud of her Confederate heritage and devoted 47 years in various positions in the General A.P. Stewart Chapter #81, United Daughters of the Confederacy. In addition to several awards for her civic, historical, social, and religious work in her community, Mrs. Leake was voted "Outstanding Woman From Walker County" and received the Distinguished Service Award for outstanding leadership.

She was a longtime member of the McFarland United Methodist Church and held numerous positions including the children's department, adult Sunday School class, and held a life membership with the United Methodist Women. When the present McFarland Church was erected, she served as chairman of decoration and furnishings committee.

Susie held memberships with the National Federation of Garden Club, the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs, and served as President of the South Crest and John Ross Garden Clubs, and she served on the board of the Y.W.C.A in Chattanooga, TN, The Cherokee Regional Library and Rossville Business & Professional Women's Club.

She was married to the late Sanford E. Leake, Sr., for 71 years. He preceded her in death in 2005.

Survivors include his children, Elizabeth Jane Leake Harvey of Chattanooga, TN, and Sanford E. Leake, Jr., Wheaton, IL; brother, Joe Clarkson; sisters, Martha Fletcher, Sidney Ann Smith, and Mary Jane Howard; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory, Rossville, GA.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the South Crest Chapel with Rev. Matt Hampton officiating.

Burial will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park with grandsons and Charles Lusk serving as pallbearers. I.O. Arnold will serve as honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to McFarland United Methodist Church, 101 East Gordon Ave., Rossville, GA 30741
