WINSTON-SALEM - Nancy Ethel O'Byrne Bertie Keeling, died Monday November 8, 2010. She was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on January 4, 1924, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Wilbur O'Byrne and Ethel McKee O'Byrne. She grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia and attended Longwood College. On March 15, 1943, she married Cecil Erskine Bertie, of Roanoke, Virginia who preceded her in death and with whom she had three children. She had also been married to Dr. William McClure Keeling. During her long life in Winston-Salem, Mrs. Keeling had been junior choir director at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a member of St. Agatha's Circle there; a member of the DAR, Medical Alliance of Winston-Salem, the Winston-Salem Fiber Guild and a Girl Scout leader. She had also been active with Old Salem, the NC School of the Arts, the Singers' Guild and the Little Theatre. Survivors are: daughters Carolyn Churchill Bertie Goldfinch (deceased husband, John) of Chapel Hill and their children John Reeves Goldfinch, Jr (Ann). and Martha O'Byrne Goldfinch Aldridge (Will); Ellen Bertie Moffitt Capers of Winston-Salem, and her children Joel David Moffitt, Katriena Ann Moffitt Sheppard and Michael Allen Capers (Jennifer); son, Dr. James Stephen Bertie of New York, and great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. A graveside Committal memorial service will be held in the courtyard Burial ground at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Thursday, November 11, at 2:00 p.m.. The family requests that memorial gifts be directed to the Book of Memory at St. Paul's Church, 520 Summit Street, Winston-Salem NC 27101, or to the Thompson Episcopal Home for Children, 6800 Saint Peter's Lane, Matthews, NC 28105.
