Son of Judge J.B.C. Lucas, James was educated at the Dominican College of St. Thomas in Kentucky along with Jefferson Davis. After returning to St. Louis, Lucas as one of the original investors & twice president of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Thomas Hart Benton, who killed Lucas' brother Charles in a duel, pushed legislation through Congress that made the railroad possible. Lucas was an organizer & director of the St. Louis Gas Company & first president of the Missouri Historical Society. His major developments were Lucas Market & Lucas Place (one of the most elegant addresses in 19th century St. Louis.)
