Stephen Coonrod Austin was the son of Henry Lamb and Mary Elizabeth Hardwick/Hartwick Austin. He married Rachel Caroline Sharp in Hardin County, Tennessee. Together they had eight children--Bartley, Henry, John, Zetta, Almeda, Stephen, Bertha and Ida Austin.

Stephen was an early-day minister in eastern Arkansas where he organized churches. He was a brother of Elder W. C. Austin, noted debater and preacher in Arkansas and Oklahoma. His name appears, along with his brother, in G. W. Million's book "A Brief History of the Liberal Baptist People in England & America 1606-1911."
