Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in New London, Connecticut, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1851, was commissioned an officer in the Artillery branch, and served in the Seminole Indian War. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Captain when promoted Lieutenant Colonel Assistant Quartermaster in August, 1862. Later promoted Colonel, he was in charge of the Bureau of Clothing in charge of the Bureau of Clothing and Equipage, Quartermaster General's Office in Washington, for the entire war. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865. After the war, he remained in the Regular Army as assistant Quartermaster General of the Division of the Pacific and retired in December 1892.
