He graduated seventeenth in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1829, in the same class as future Confederate Generals, Robert E. Lee and Joseph E. Johnston. He was assigned to various posts in the Western frontier and established Fort Inge in Texas while serving as a Captain with the 1st United States Regular Infantry in 1849. He was also the first commanding officer at Fort Duncan in Texas. After the Civil War began, he was promoted to Colonel. He commanded the Alton Federal Prison in Illinois when the first Confederate prisoners arrived on February 9, 1862. He then commanded the 2nd United States Regular Infantry in the Army of the Potomac at the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. The regiment was engaged in action at the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. He received a promotion to Brevet Brigadier General in the Regular Army on March 13, 1865. After the war, he returned to Cincinnati, Ohio where he later died at his residence when he was 75 years old.
