HAMPTON - Sam Houston Leatherwood, a native of Waynesville, N.C., and a 57-year resident of Hampton, passed on to a better life on Oct. 6, 1997, after a struggle with cancer.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 60 years, Thedis Leatherwood; a devoted and loving son, Jack D. Leatherwood, and dear daughter-in-law, Judy Leatherwood; granddaughter, Sheryl Terry, grandson-in-law, Mark Terry, and great-grandson, Matthew Terry; granddaughter, Rebecca Blank, grandson-in-law, Samuel Blank, and great-grandson, Andrew Blank; and grandson, Christopher Leatherwood, granddaughter-in-law, Elizabeth Leatherwood, and great-grandson, Zachary Leatherwood.

Pap-pa, as he was affectionately called by his grand- and great-grandchildren, lived a full and eventful life. After 42 years of service, he retired as a supervisor in the X42 Pipe Department of Newport News Ship Building, but he remained active by working at Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member. He was well-loved by his fellow church members, who were a great source of help and prayer through his illness. Special thanks for Yvonne Garris for all her love.

He also busied himself tinkering in his ``Elderly Only'' workshop by woodworking and painting. His paintings are treasured by those lucky enough to receive them, and they are all uniquely signed ``Sam Did It.''

His family wishes to thank all who helped and prayed for us through this difficult time - especially Carolyn Dale, who took good care of him, and Vicki, John and Earl of Sentara Hospice.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene H. Parisher. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday in R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 1647 Briarfield Road, Hampton 23666; or Sentara Hospice Program, 2713 Magruder Blvd., Suite G, Hampton 23666.

Sam was a kind, gentle and generous man who touched many lives and made many friends with his smile, charm and sense of humor. He was a good man. We celebrate his life and remember this wonderful and generous man with great love.
