Grace J. Oakes, 88, formerly of 808 W. Elm St., died at 5:05 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 1992, at Parkhill Skilled Nursing Center. Born July 1, 1904, in Warren County to John W. and Nora Belle Klingman Hook, she married Orrin [Orin] Oakes in Chillicothe. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by three sisters. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Hilmer (Juanita) Swanson of Chillicothe, Mrs. Richard (Sandra) Lyon of Peoria and Shirley Lewis of Galesburg; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Crossan of Peoria. She worked at P.A. Bergner's in Peoria and J.C. Penney's in Chillicothe. She was past president of American Legion Post 9 Auxiliary in Chillicothe and was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church.
