JOSEPH R. AULD, 80 RETIRED WALTHAM POLICE OFFICER:
Joseph R. Auld of Waltham, a retired Waltham police lieutenant, died Friday at Deaconess Waltham Hospital. He was 80.
Born in Waltham, Mr. Auld attended Waltham Vocational School and Babson College.
Mr. Auld served in the Marine Corps 1st Division during World War II. He participated in the invasion of the Palau Islands and Okinawa and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Mr. Auld was a semi-pro baseball player and was offered a contract by the Boston Braves in 1948. He chose instead to stay at home and raise his family. He joined the Police Department later that year and was appointed a sergeant in 1956. He was named a lieutenant in 1967 and was then assigned to the detective bureau from which he retired in 1982.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, the American Legion, and the Massachusetts Police Association.
Mr. Auld also coached in the Waltham Little Nippers baseball league for many years.
He leaves his wife, Mary L. (Maher); a daughter, Maureen D. of Holyoke; two sons, Raymond J. and James R., both of Waltham; two sisters, Gertrude Piantedosi of Lexington and Eileen Rouchleau of Waltham; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Saint Charles Borromeo Church in Waltham. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham.
