U.S. Congressman. He graduated from West Kentucky College, in 1896, taught school and served as superintendent of schools Mayfield, Kentucky, (1898-1900). He then attended the law department of Cumberland University Tennessee, was admitted to the bar in 1902 and commenced practice law in Mayfield, Kentucky. He was county surveyor, (1902-10), judge of the Graves County Court, (1913-19), U.S. Attorney for the western district of Kentucky, (1919-23) and president of the board of trustees of Presbyterian Theological Seminary, (1920-27). In 1927, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventieth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 58.
