Dr. Susan M. "Sue" (Emert) Ellis was the great aunt by marriage to Donald Ervin Ellis, this writer's husband.
Sue was the daughter of Richard C. Emert (1821- ) and Mahala (Lyon) Emert (1826- ), both of whom were born in Tennessee, and it is believed that both died in Illinois.
Sue had the following known siblings:

The Emert family was living in Scott County, Virginia in the 1850 census and Sue was born there in 1855. Within the next three years, the Emerts had moved to Illinois as the youngest four children were born there. In the 1870 census, they were living in Hancock County, Illinois.
Sue's father died before 1880 as her mother was a widow with six children living in Hancock County in the 1880 census. Shortly after this census Mahala Emert and her children moved to Missouri. Sue's oldest sister Elizabeth had married Samuel Marsha and was already living around the LaPlata, Missouri area which is a few miles south of Kirksville, Missouri, and the Emerts moved to this same location.
Sue married Harrison P. "Harry" Ellis on September 4, 1883 in Adair County, Missouri. A newspaper article reports that the wedding took place at the home of Sue's mother four miles south of Kirksville.
Sue and Harry resided in Kirksville after their marriage where they both attended Dr. Andrew Taylor Still's American School of Osteopathy. Harry graduated in 1899 and Sue in 1900. They then moved to Illinois where they established a medical practice and both worked as Osteopathic physicians in Canton City, Fulton County, Illinois. They had no children.
The Ellis doctors returned to Missouri 12 years later as Dr. Harry Ellis was ill from overwork. They resided in LaPlata, Macon County, Missouri where some of Sue's siblings lived. Sue's mother had also died here in 1898 and was buried at the LaPlata Cemetery.
Harry then suffered a nervous breakdown in the spring of 1914 and was hospitalized at the Missouri State Mental Hospital #2 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Mo. He died in July of 1914.
Sue then moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she taught for several years in the Osteopathic School there. She died in 1926. Both are buried in Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery which is behind the Osteopathic School from which they graduated in Kirksville, Missouri.
