Dr. Charles Washington Conway was the first physician of New Lexington. He came to the township from Jefferson County, Tennessee about the same time as the Woodmansee family, who's daughter Phebe he would later marry. He intended to make only a temporary stay for the purpose of disposing of the whole or a portion of a large tract of land which his father had received for military services. It was at this time that Dr. Conway married Phebe Woodmansee. Dr. Conway was born on September 17, 1798 and was four years her senior.

Phebe Woodmansee was born on April 8, 1802 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. She came to Fairfield Township in July of 1818 with her father, Samuel Woodmansee who settled where James Moore now lives.

Dr. Conway and Phebe Woodmansee were married on March 1, 1821. Four children were the offspring of this union:

Sarah Porter Conway was born May 13, 1822. Sarah married Issac Newton Cox and is now a resident of Penn Township.

Dr. Joseph Porter Conway was born July 23, 1822 in Highland County, OH. Joseph married Sarah Susan Senter and is now living in Tennessee.

James W. Conway was born November 14, 1825 and is now a denizen of Penn Township.

George W. Conway was born June 6, 1827 and now lives in Illinois.

Dr. Conway died December 17, 1828. He is buried in Burnett Cemetery, New Vienna, Clinton County, OH.
