J. Howard "Howie" Stapleton, 81 of Hendersonville, NC, formerly from Bayville, NY, died on May 29, 2005, at his home. Born in Buffalo, NY, he was the son of the late Michael H. and Anna M.(Balz) Stapleton and the husband of the late Joan E.(Tilford) Stapleton. Brother of the late George M. Stapleton.

A veteran of WWII, he served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater of Operations from 1942-1946. He graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1950 with a BS degree. He was a stockbroker and served as Mayor of Bayville from 1974-1982 and a village trustee from 1964-1982. He was also active as a Scoutmaster in the Bayville Area. He retired to Hendersonville, NC in 1996.

He was the brother-in-law of John M. and Adele (Knoell) Tilford of Huntington and Uncle to Gail Tilford Peach (Robert)of Wilmington, MA and Gary Tilford (Barbara)of Jenkintown, PA. He is also survived by grandnieces and nephews, Holly Tilford of Baltimore, MD, Kristen Peach of Somerville, MA, Jamison Tilford(Yvonne) of Bradford, PA and Randall Peach of Wilmington, MA.

Wake was held at the Funeral home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove on June 24, 2005 and a Mass was held on June 25, 2005 at St. Gertrude RC Church, Bayville, NY.
