Darius William Appleby enlisted and was mustered into United States service as a Private in Company A of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 13th, 1862, at New York City, New York, for three years service at the age of 19. He served with the 9th Regiment until they were mustered out of service, when, with the other three year men of the regiment, he was transferred to Company B of the 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 6th, 1863. He served with the unit along the South Carolina Coast and died of disease on January 9th, 1864, at the General Hospital in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
