My 1st cousin 5X removed. Not a very close relationship, but I've always been interested in his story and feel sympathy about the injustices done to him and his family.

I am an ancestor of yours and have researched you, as many others have. There were other bandido's in the family, some well known. They also were angry that their land, means of surviving and way of life was destroyed. I will not call you "El Zorro", because of your disrespect toward women and other reasons. But, I honor you for fighting for your personal ideals and honorable way in which you met your death.

Near Vazquez's grave are the graves of the Currin family. Frances was a friend of mine and related to Vasquez. On holidays I would bring her to the plot and we would leave flowers for her husband and Vasquez. I had no idea he existed till Frances 'Tachie' told me his story. I still visit when I am in San Jose and leave flowers for my friend 'Tachie' Currin, Tiburcio and another close friend in the same area Mary Costa. There is a book about him that has a picture of the grave stone and flowers we had brought that Memorial Day in 1965.

Social persecution led you to the evil that you did. Maybe that's not a valid excuse, but Anglos had their Robin Hood and other ethicities have their Tiburcio Vasquez's too. You confessed to a Priest your sins and had last rites performed upon you, Men may have condemned you, but God is the last Judge.

They couldn't catch you in Fresno after the Firebaugh Ferry and Jones Ferry robberies, but you remained a famous outlaw here even after your capture and execution.

Tiburcio when leaving the cemetary after visiting you my sister and I realized we were locked in, the cemetary had closed!!!! We left the car overnight and was able to find two wrought iron bars that were pulled apart enough to squeeze through. I told my sister, "He's still up to his tricks he probably wanted me to spend the night this time". :)

Hello Tiburcio:I never knew you, but I believe I know you. You were a man seized by hatred which was understandable. A foreign army seized your property, and your nation abandoned you. You were a rebel with a cause. The cause of dignity which is universal. You loved more than you ever hated, and your downfall was not knowing when to quit, and realize that the folly is with the people. God bless.

"A spirit of hatred and revenge took possession of me. I had numerous fights in defense of what I believed to be my rights and those of my countrymen. I believed we were unjustly deprived of the social rights that belonged to us." (dictated before his hanging in order to explain his actions)
