BEDFORD MAN IS KILLED IN RAIL ACCIDENT TODAY
Vernon H. Botner, 44, Bedford railroad conductor, was killed instantly this morning in an accident near the Airline Sponsler stripper mine tipple south of Linton.
According to the Greene County Coroner Delmer Hasler, who investigated, Mr. Botner was caught between two freight cars of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific company and was dragged a distance of 62 feet.
The coroner said that the wheels of one of the freight cars passed over Mr. Botner's body.
He said that members of the train crew were Ezra Sutton of Jasonville, the engineer; Elwood Endicott of St. Bernice and Morgan Kile of Clinton, the brakemen, and Sheldon Dove of Jasonville, the fireman.
Coroner Hasler said that the crew told him that a "knuckle" (coupler) had broken between two of the cars and that the crew had stopped to make repairs.
After the repairs had been completed, the train started backing, pushing cars onto the slope above the mine tipple.
The crew members, Coroner Hasler said, did not know that Mr. Botner was between two cars.
Lyle Shanahan, trainmaster of the Milwaukee company, was called from Terre Haute to conduct an investigation this afternoon.
Mr. Botner's body was taken to the Welch and Cornett Funeral home and was to be removed to the Ferguson-Lee Funeral home at Bedford for the completion of funeral arrangements.
Details of survivors were not available this afternoon but it was reported that Mr. Botner was married and was the father of three or four children.

Botner, 44, of Bedford, and formerly of St. Bernice, who was killed in an train accident Thursday, will be brought to the Frist Funeral Home for visitation. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home at Bedford. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memorial Park there.
