William Alexander Baucum was born 5 July 1823 in Tusaloosa, Tuslaloosa County, Alabama. A book entitled "Baucom Families in the US by Banks McLaurin shows that his parents were Willis Asa and Ann Hill Baucum. However, unable to confirm.

William married Mary Louisa Harrell 12 May 1857 in Talladega County, Alabama. Mary was born abt. 1832 in Alabama. Her parents were Jesse T. Harrell and Elizabeth (Rozell maiden name)Harrell.

William served in the Alabama Regt. 24 Co K24 during the Civil War. The Confederate Census for 1907 of veterans living in Clay County listed my great grandfather under the name of BAWCUM, WILLIAM ALEXANDER the following PO Chandler Springs, Alabama, Born July 5, 1823 in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, first entered service as pvt. at Millerville, Alabama in 24th Alabama Rgt.
Co. K. and continued until surrender was paroled. "Was a Miller about 3 months." In a book "Confederate Veterans buried in Clay, Cleburn and Randolph counties in Alabama by Mildred Smith Laney listed under the Bethlehem Church Cemetery, Baucum, William Alexander, B. 5 July 1823 Tuscaloosa, AL D. 14 Dec. 1914. Entered as a private at Millerville, AL in Co. K. 24th Al. Regiment and continued until the surrender and was paroled. Also found a book entitled Clay County Historical, Ashland, Alabama - Newsletter Vol IV 1993 title at top of page Clay County, Alabama 1907 Census of Confederate Soldiers listed the same information as above.

William married a second time also to a Mary A. Riby 17 Jan 1886 in Clay County, AL They did not have any children.

William died 14 December 1914 in Clay County, Alabama, he is buried in Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery in Clay County, AL.

Mary was listed on the 1920 Clay County census with her step-daughter, Martha "Mattie" Wooten. Mary was listed as 78 years old and showed her as a widow. Do not know exact date of death, but after 9 January 1920. Do not know where she is buried.
