Mr. Barnette, 85, of Charlotte, died Thursday, June 5, 2009 at the Stanley Total Living Center. He was born April 12, 1923, in Huntersville to the late David and Bonta Barnette. He served five years in the US Navy during World War II and was a life-long member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Violet Cook Barnette; daughters Frances Belt and husband Steve of Kings Mountain and Nancy Warren of Charlotte; stepson, Andrew Polson and wife Barbara of Hardeeville, SC; brothers, Hughie Barnette and wife Hazel of Concord and Sterling Barnette and wife Kathy of Homosassa, GL; sister, Mamie Gibson of Huntersville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother M.D. Barnette.

A funeral service was held Sunday, June 8, at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Howard and the Rev. Jim Howell officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 11724 Asbury Chapel Road, Huntersville, NC 28078 or the Stanley Total Living Center Residents Fund, 514 Old Mt. Holly Road, Stanley, NC 28164. Raymer Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
