James Harvey Mayes was the son of Rodham Tellis Mayes and Anna Offenbacker. he was a member of the Seventh Virginia Cavalry and served under Colonel George W Summers, of the famous Summers - Koontz execution incident near Mt Jackson, Va He was awarded a sum of $437 in confederate money for a horse that was shot and killed in action in Upperville, Loudon County, Va. That happened in June 1863, while in 1864 James Harvey Mayes himself was shot and nearly killed at a small town called Ninevah, Va between Front Royal and Winchester, Va He was shot in the chest and torso area with a Colt 7 shooter. after being taken to the confederate army hospital in Winchester Va the surgeons removed 2 of 3 mini balls from the chest area of Mr Mayes. He then proceeded with the rest of his life carrying the 3rd miniball in his chest until he died on Feb 15th,1892 On this very day. He was married to Sarah Ellen Painter and they had 8 children. 3 boys and 5 girls.
