Herbert Leslie Saxon

Herbert Leslie Saxon was the third of seven children born to Arthur "Gillespie" Saxon and Margaret Rosina Walsh Saxon. His siblings were Robert Kenneth Saxon, Arthur Richard Saxon, Alfred Martin Saxon, Mary Helen Saxon, Margaret Bernadette Saxon Billingsley, and Clementina Frances Saxon Osinski. Herb married Lillie Etta Shuman Saxon in St. Mary's Church, Aurora, Dearborn County, IN on February 8, 1939. They raised eight children.

Herb took up the hobbies of wood carving and furniture making after his retirement; his works included a walnut desk, wall shelf, memento box, lamps and numerous wood carvings of animals, bracelets, Christmas ornaments, and linked chains. He also constructed and painted two large Uncle Sam flag holders.

"Herbert L. Saxon, 73, R. R. 7, Rushville, died Friday night at his home. He was a retired farmer; he was born December 29, 1904 in Fayette County. He was the son of Arthur and Margaret Walsh Saxon. He was married Feb. 8, 1939 to Lillie Etta Shuman. Mr. Saxon moved to Rush County in 1945. He operated a wall papering and painting business here for many years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as past grand knight and financial secretary. Mr. Saxon is survived by his wife. Also surviving are five sons, ... three daughters ... two brothers, Arthur R., Louisville, Ky.; and Robert K., Connersville; two sisters Miss Mary Helen Saxon, Connersville and Mrs. Clementine Osinski, Montrose, Michigan. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren. One brother and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday at St. Mary Church with Rev. William Cleary officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Saxon home, R. R. 7, Rushville between 2 and 4 p.m., Sunday. The rosary will be said at 8 p.m., Sunday.
