Sylvia Greenway Freeman Ganer
NEWKIRK — Sylvia Greenway Ganer, longtime Ponca City resident, died Sunday morning, Feb. 21, 2010, at her home. She was 93.
The daughter of Burdine and Gussie Mae Sloan Freeman, Sylvia was born Oct. 23, 1917, in Noble County. She grew up in Sumner and began her education there. Her father died when she was quite young, and her mother died when Sylvia was 14. She moved to Hunter to live with family and to finish her education. She was graduated from Hunter High School with the class of 1936. Following graduation she gained employment as a housekeeper for a doctor and his family in Arkansas City, Kan. Later she was employed in Blackwell as a care giver for a teacher who had been burned.
On May 7, 1939, Sylvia and Ralph Henry Ganer were married in First Baptist Church of Blackwell. They established their first home in Deer Creek, moving a short time later to Byron. There she was employed for three years in the Creamery Station.
In the early 1940s she became ill with tuberculosis and went to a sanatorium in Clinton. She was there for two years before rejoining her family in Nardin. In 1945 they moved to Ponca City. In 1949 Sylvia had a recurrence of TB and returned to the sanatorium for a year. She returned to her home and her family and remained in Ponca City the rest of her life. Mr. Ganer died Jan. 4, 1980. Sylvia kept children in her home and took in ironing.
Sylvia was a member of Second Baptist Church of Ponca City. She was in charge of her church's nursery for nearly 40 years and became known and loved as "Granny Ganer." A talented cake baker, she attended classes at Pioneer Vo-Tech to hone her decorating skills. Over the years, she has made a great number of wedding cakes as well as cakes for other occasions. She is also well known for her peanut brittle and peanut butter balls. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting. She took great delight in her family and her church family.
Sylvia is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Wilkins and Dolores Hammers, both of Ponca City; one granddaughter and her husband, Margie and Chad Jones of Ponca City; and a great-grandson, Wesley "Doug" Jones of Ponca City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, R.C. Freeman and George Hatfield.
Private interment will take place in Nardin Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, in Second Baptist Church of Ponca City with Ken Newport, pastor, officiating. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. There will be no public viewing at any time.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to either The Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, Tenn. 37214 or to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, 1904 N. Union, Suite 103, Ponca City, Okla. 74601.
