Roxanna Welch Whiteside was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi to William H. Whiteside and Jane McBride Harper of Maury and Obion Counties of Tennessee. She had four half-siblings: Elizabeth, Paralee, Samuel and Margaret. She married Robert Newton Bell Dec. 24, 1876. Roxie was the mother of ten children, eight reaching adulthood. She died in childbirth with her last child Roxie Myrtle. The gravesites of Roxie Myrtle and Willie May have never been located. The Whitesides were devout members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for many generations.
