General: You said to Grant: "Before I unconditionally surrender, you will bury a lot more of your men in front of Vicksburg!" Hope you someday receive the credit and honor you are due. Thank you for your service in the defense of Vicksburg, from a descendant of two brothers who were there. Someday the world will know the truth!

Here's a "witness tree" from Warrenton, Virginia, where you settled after the War.

You were the highest ranking yankee in the Confederate Army, despite the fact that you were not trusted by some. After your surrender to Sam Grant (Who, I believe met you in the pre-war Army), no suitable command was available for an officer of your high rank. Consequently, you resigned your Lieutenant Generalcy to serve in the Artillery as a Lieutenant Colonel. If this is not proof of your loyalty to the Confederacy, I don't know what is. A lesser man would have just left the service altogether. Rest easy General/Colonel Pemberton.

Your defense of Vicksburg and of Salisbury, NC in April 1865 erases any fragment of doubt in your loyalty. Nicely done!
