President of Pakistan. Yahya Khan was a Pakistani general who later served as the 3rd President of Pakistan from 1969 to 1971. He graduated from Punjab University and later joined the military where he rose through the ranks to the rank of general. Yahya Khan became commander in chief of the military in 1966 and was in command when street riots erupted in the country. He was chosen to bring order back to the country by President Ayub Khan. In 1969 Yahya Khan became president when Ayub Khan resigned and two years later a conflict erupted between the government and East Pakistan. East Pakistan wanted independence from Pakistan and Yahya Khan responded by trying to crack down on the movement. The brutality of the crack down led many refugees from East Pakistan to flee to India, who in turn invaded East Pakistan and defeated the Pakistani army. East Pakistan became the independent country of Bangladesh and soon after this defeat, Yahya Khan resigned. He was placed under house arrest by the new government and no longer played any part in the nation's politics after being released due to medical reasons.
