Midland Coy Leon Fegett, of Midland, passed away August 25, 2007, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, he was 84. Leon was born January 30, 1923 in Duncan, Oklahoma the son of A. Ray Fegett and Esther (Thomason) Fegett. He attended school in Graham, Texas.
During WWII he joined the Army in February 1943 where he served as a Forward Supply Sergeant in the front lines in the European theater until the war's end. He received an Honorable Discharge on January 1946 as a Technician 4th grade, Battery C 556th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion. He returned to his family in Palacios in 1946 where he met and married Roselyn Maberry. The family moved to Midland in 1949 where their two sons, Steve and Thomas were born. He and Roselyn were divorced in 1967, and he married Barbara Timmons in 1967 by whom he had one son, Clifford D. Fegett.
Leon worked at a variety of jobs: as a doodle bugger at one of the 215 oil companies, then for a local milk company and then part time at the Williams Feed Store fixing equipment while working full time for the US Postal Service where he worked his way up to a Area Maintenance Technician. He retired in 1987.
He was a pioneer of his time and loved electronics, mechanics and photography. He would often be found in his shed fixing or modifying some new technology. He also enjoyed playing his guitar. His first single recording on vinyl made in his home in 1949, was played on the local radio station. He played at many Bluegrass Festivals as backup with such artists as Clint Keys, Kathy Dietrich, Bill Monroe, Bill, Pat and Kathy Meurer, and many others.
His memberships included West Texas Bluegrass Association.
Leon is survived by his wife, Barbara of Midland, two sons, Clifford D. Fegett (wife Monica), of San Antonio, and Thomas R. Fegette (wife Ellen, deceased), of California; three grandchildren, Nathaniel E. Fegette, Julia R. Fegette, and Cory D. Coburn; his brother, Oscar W. Fegett (wife Ellen), of Midland, sister, Elsie F. (husband James Johnson), of The Colony, Texas; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A. Ray and M. Ester Fegett, of Midland, his sister, Freda E. Germer, and his son, Steven L. (Fegett) Coburn.
The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Monday August 27, 2007 between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. Funeral Services have been scheduled for 1:00 P.M. August 28, 2007 at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
