Joel Cornelius was the second son of Moses Cornelius and Cynthia Bynum. He married Mary "Polly" Easley February 1, 1832 in Blount County Alabama with the consent of Workam (Warham) Easley, father of the bride. This marriage is recorded on page 444, Book B, 1830-1838, Blount County. They had nine known children: William Thomas, Solomon, Cynthia Ann, Nancy Syrena, Sarah Ann, Miriam Ann, Elijah Benson, Moses Andrew, and Meredith.

Joel married Rachel Davis November 9, 1876 in Blount County.

Several sources state his name as Joel Adams. While it may be true, I have no evidence of "Adams" being his middle name.

When Joel died and the site of his burial is not documented. It is known that he lived in Blount County all of his adult life. The last recorded facts about Joel are: he was a "bondman" at his son Moses Andrew's wedding in Blount July 28, 1870; 1870 Blount census taken August 7 shows Joel, age 64, at Blountsville; and he married in 1876. Thus his death occurred 1876-1880..

Eight of Joel's nine children came to Texas. Only William Thomas stayed in Alabama. Moses Andrew and Elijah Benson probably came to Texas in 1874 as they appear on the 1875 Ellis County, Texas tax rolls. Solomon came to Texas after the 1880 census, but moved on to Oklahoma prior to 1900. The 1880 Texas census shows Cynthia Ann and husband George Washington Tidwell, Miriam Ann and husband James Gideon Hartley, and Sarah Ann and husband Ancel Allgood living in Texas. The last to come to Texas was Nancy Syrena and husband Levi Wilson Armstrong in 1881.

Though Joel and Polly did not live to see all of their grandchildren, they were grandparents to sixty-one known children.
