Private
3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment
(Duke of Wellington's), British Army

He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He and Sjt Paul McAleese died while on a routine foot patrol near Sangin in Helmand province. Pte Young was hit by an improvised explosive device and Sjt McAleese went to recover his comrade but was killed by a second bomb.

Aged 18, Pte Young grew up in Orchard Park, north Hull. He enlisted in February 2008 and joined the regiment in September. He was one of 125 reinforcements sent to Afghanistan only three weeks earlier after a wave of British casualties. He was quickly recognised as a popular, good-natured, tenacious soldier with great potential. Pte Young had volunteered to be his section's lead man on patrols, one of the most dangerous of jobs, responsible for finding IEDs.

He is survived by his mother Angela, brother Carl, sister Leah, and girlfriend Nicola, along with other family and friends.

Funeral service, with full military honours, held on September 16, 2009 at Holy Trinity Church in Hull was attended by some 1,000 mourners.
