Loyd Polk was born at Beaver Creek, Feliciana, Spanish West Florida, which was not considered part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. West Florida was a region on the north shore of the Gulf of Mexico, which underwent several boundary and sovereignty changes during its history. Many of the settlers in the area participated in the West Florida Rebellion in 1810 and Loyd's father Isaac Polk may have been a participant in the rebellion. On 27 Oct 1810, parts of West Florida were annexed by proclamation of U.S. President James Madison, who claimed the region as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Louisiana was admitted as a state 30 Apr 1812. Feliciana Parish was formed in 1810 and divided in 1824 into East Feliciana Parish and West Feliciana Parish. Beaver Creek became Clinton, the parish seat of East Feliciana Parish.
