Jeremiah Adam "Maya" Johnston, 28, of Elgin, a victim of murder last month, died near Elgin. A celebration of life will be held at the Hu-Na-Ha RV Park in Elgin from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
Maya was born July 6, 1981, in Atchison, Kan. He came to Elgin in 1987 and attended Elgin schools.
Maya was very good with his hands and did carpentry work over the years. He loved the outdoors, fishing, mushrooming and camping. He was very intelligent and enjoyed reading all types of literature.
He had a great love of animals and children, especially his daughters.
Survivors include his daughters, Acacia and Signey Johnston of Maine; mother and stepfather, Nora and Leo Kepplinger of Elgin; sister and brother-in-law, Joie and Kelly Becker of Elgin; stepfather, Gery Sirrine of Elgin; stepsister, Desta Sirrine of Salem; and numerous extended family members in Kansas and elsewhere.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to ARC in care of Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850.
I Attended the celebration of life for Jeremiah yesterday. Many family and friends were gathered to tell stories of his life. It was a sad gathering but helped bring closure for many and brought a lot of people closer together. I will always remember his nice smile and gentle ways and I know heaven is blessed with his presence there.
God Bless his family and may his memory live on for generations.
