Elijah Nicholas Douglas, son of Jesse Powell and Martha Sophronia ParkerOBITUARY FOR NICK DOUGLASThe homes of Highfill and all thesurrounding neighborhood were saddenedwhen death claimed one of our native sons after only a short illness. Elijah Nicholas Douglas was born January 4, 1890, on the homestead of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Powell Douglas, where his widowed mother "Aunt" Phronia .Douglas now resides, his father having passed away just 13 years ago to a day. Nick, as he was called by his host of friends, was married in 1914 to Miss Maude Fair, next youngest daughter ofMr. and Mrs. L. E. Fair, of Highfill. To this union were born five lovely daughters, Lorraine, Dortha, Phadonnh,, Nadine and Margaret Faye, who with their mother, survive him. He also leaves to mourn his loss, his mother, two sisters here, Mrs. Bethel Hammontree and Miss Pauline Douglas and his eldest sister, Mrs. Hatten Wright, Sublette, Kan., who was here during the summer months to be at hisbedside; also three brothers, Ben, of Tracy, Calif., Barney and Frank, of Highfill, an uncle, John Douglas, of Highfill, and .Decatur Douglas, of Vaughn, Ark., and many nieces, nephews and cousins here and elsewhere. In August Mr. and Mrs. Douglas went with his brother, Ben, to Tracy Calif., for his brother's health. In December, 1929, after a siege of the flu, Nick developed pneumonia from which he never properly recovered. The family returned last March to their home one mile east of High'ill, from which place death came to the devoted father, Thursday p. m. Sept. 11. He was a member of the Baptisthurch of Highfill since 1914. Rev. Luthey Smith conducted funeral services Friday at the cemetery near hss mother's home, where the remains were laid to rest near by his father.Although suffering intensely, the deeased had a word of thoughtfulness or all of the loved ones who administered to his wants till the last. Everything that was possible was done for his comfort while ill, but what a joy to now he was prepared to enjoy the greater home where no pain is known. Not dead—just gone before" is the one consoling thought. The sympathy of all goes out to the family in their sorrow. Many beautiful floral pieces attested o the high esteem in which the deeased was held by all who knew and oved him. —A FRIEND. --Gentry Journal Advance (Gentry, Benton Co., AR) October 02, 1930, page 4
