Mr. Carter was a Union Civil War veteran and member of Eugene GAR Post 7. He enlisted 7/15/1861 as a private in Company G, 1st Illinois Cavalry and was discharged 10/9/1861.
He reenlisted in Company K, 11th Illinois Cavalry on 12/31/1861 and rose from private to Quartermaster Sergeant. He was discharged 9/30/1865. The 11th served in the Western Theater under Grant and Sherman and fought in the battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta and others.
Carter died in Omaha and his body was returned to Eugene where he was buried.
