Rev. Msgr. Edward Wojtycha of Stuart, FL, formerly of Bayonne, Jersey City and Monmouth Beach, NJ, died on Monday, at his Florida residence.
Beloved son of the late Frank and Marie (Zablocki) Wojtycha. Brother of the late Chester Wojtycha and Dr. Bernard J. Wattiker. Beloved uncle of Dr. Edward Wotycha, Anne Ciesla, Katherine Olivetti, Virginia Sheerin, William Wattiker, Paula Majors, Peter Wattiker and Barbara Stellway. Also survived by many grandnieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Born in Jersey City, NJ graduated St. Peter's Prep, Seton Hall University and continued studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, New Jersey Ordained June 1938. Said First Mass at Our Lady of Victories, Jersey City. Served in three parishes during priestly career. First assignment was St. Vincent de Paul Church, Bayonne from 1938 until 1963, and served as administrator for seven years. Appointed founding pastor and builder of Our lady of Mercy Church, Jersey City from 1963 to 1970. Appointed pastor of St. Andrew's Church, Bayonne from 1970 until retirement in 1985.
While at St. Andrew's he was elevated to Rev. Monsignor granted by Pope John Paul II in 1983. He had the pleasure of seeing the burning of two mortgages: St. Vincent de Paul and Our Lady of Mercy Churches. Witness to twenty young men from St. Vincent de Paul parish ordained to the priesthood.
Upon retirement, he offered his services to Bishop Daily of Palm Beach, FL. He helped to serve at St. Joseph's Church, Stuart, FL. When in New Jersey, he helped the parish of the Most Precious Blood in Monmouth Beach.
He served on the assessment and review boards of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ, also served on the Formation and Personnel Boards. He served as Auxiliary Navel Chaplain at the Bayonne Navel Base.
He was named Man of the Year from such groups as The State and National Junior Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Rotary, Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, Disabled War Veterans, American Legion. Received the N.J. Governor's Award and is cited in the records of the United States Congress and New Jersey State Legislature. He Received the VFW National Youth Award. He was elected to the National Drum Corps Hall of Fame and was also placed in the New Jersey and Massachusetts Drum Corps Hall of Fame. He formed the famous St. Vincent's Drum and Bugle Corps who won ten national championships and twenty two state championships. The Drum Corps had the honor of marching in the Inaugurations of all Presidents from Truman to Kennedy. The Drum Corps is also written in the History of the U.S. Congress. He has two streets named after him: one on Bayonne, "Msgr. Wojtycha Way" and one in Jersey City, "Msgr. Wojtycha Drive".
Visitation at the G. Keenen O'Brien Funeral Home, 984 Avenue C, Bayonne, NJ on Sunday June 14th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul RC Church Bayonne, NJ on Monday June 15th, at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow, at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City, NJ.
