Sandra Joy Burgess, 71, of Paris, TN passed away May 10, 2009, at her home in Paris, TN. She was born December 11, 1937, in Kalamazoo, MI, the daughter of Edwin and Mildred Ayers Trevena. She graduated from S. Wayne High School, attended Western MI University, graduated from Argubrite Business College in Battle Creek in 1962. Sandy married David Burgess, former president of Burgess Seed & Plant Co, Galesburg, in 1963. Mr. Burgess passed away in 2001. Animals were Sandy's life. She was actively involved in animal projects from 1979-2003: secretary of P.A.W.S. in Carlsbad, NM, first Executive Director of the Humane Society, Cottonwood, AZ, Sandy founded and operated the no-kill shelter Valley Dale Animal Haven, Clarkdale, AZ, owned King of the Mountain Boarding Kennel & Pet Cremation Service in Show Low, AZ. She moved to Paris, TN in 2003. Sandy is survived by step-daughter, Myrna Burgess Johnson, Kalamazoo; sister, Janet Elaine Kershner, Galesburg; brothers, Edwin Trevena, Kalamazoo, Irvin Trevena, Hesperia, CA; step-sister, Mary Kovach; five grandchildren, Mark and Michael Johnson, Marsha Dillon, Marian Clough and Margaret Tesar; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by step-brother, Thomas Aungst and step-sister, Una Preussel. Cremation is scheduled. Graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, in Kalamazoo, MI, 10:00 a.m. on June 13th. Sandy's life celebration will follow for family and friends at 173 W. Battle Creek St. Galesburg, MI.
