Leola Annabelle Stockard was born April 2, 1885 in Leap Year(Wayne)TN; married Jefferson Davis Jan.11, 1903 near Mertens,TX; and died in Hillsboro(Hill)TX.
Thomas Arthur Stockard,her father, was born Jan. 1, 1855 in TN and died May 28, 1932 in Melrose(Curry)NM. He married Mary Eugenia Meredith who was born Sept. 6, 1855 in (Wayne)TN and died in 1941 in Melrose(Curry)NM. Thomas and Jean were married Jan 2, 1883.
She was the mother of ten children: Darrell Merritt, born April 17,1904;Maurine, born May 27, 1906; Wallace Turpin, born July 3,1908;Curnie Meredith, born Nov. 23, 1910; Lois, born Nov. 27 1912; Winnie Jean, born Jan. 31,1915; Hallie Mae(Hal), born Jan. 7,1917; Bernice Marion(Bunk); and Ola Christine( Kik), born Nov. 7,1921.
Jefferson Davis built a beautiful two story home for his family. They were the first family to have indoor plumbing in Mertens; the second family to have an automobile.
His three sons graduated from Texas A&M. All of his daughters attended college, also.
Mrs. Davis lived in their home for many years after her husband's death in 1946. She made outstanding pear preserves. She spent her later years at the Moody House on the Seawall with a view of the Gulf. Several of her children lived nearby: Wallace, Lois,and Kik in Texas City; Mabel in Galveston.
