He owned and operated Long's Appliances in Jefferson, and later in Middletown, for a total of 79 years, with his wife joining the business in 1941. He worked as an X-ray operator at Fairchild Aviation Corp. from 1941 until 1945, and trained numerous electronics technicians under the G.I. Bill following World War II. He was a member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren for 72 years. He was a member of the Middletown Lions Club for 56 years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, making 18 visits to Europe and South America over his lifetime.
