Mrs. Heise was our next door neighbor when I was growing up in northern Baltimore County, Maryland. She was always very kind and generous with me. I recall she loved raising African violets. She sent one home with me and it flourished on the windownsill on the western side of the house. I wore a necklace of crystal beads which were also a gift from her until they mysteriously disappeared sometime in my twelfth year. Mrs. Heise took a seven year old me to the Oriole Cafeteria in Towson, a hugh treat for a little country bumpkin! I spotted some graffitti on a bridge and asked her about it and she told me it was very bad. I remember her every time I see "urban art" and think "Oh, Mrs. Heise would NOT approve!" But, most especially I remember being drilled on the differences between "there", "their" and "they're". Mrs. Heise was a retired teacher, you see. I make many, many grammatical mistakes, but seldom do I confuse those three words. Uterine cancer claimed her when I was nearly 9 years old. Mrs. Heise's impact on me was profound and lasting. I'll honor her memory as long I have decent brain function.
