Sarah Von Phul, sister of St. Louis prominent businessman, Henry Von Phul and artist Maria Von Phul, married James Mason in 1818. A daughter, Martha Maria, was born to the couple. The Masons lived in Edwardsville where James Mason was Receiver of Public Moneys. In 1819 Edward Coles, future governor of Illinois, moved from Virginia to near Edwardsville, IL, where he boarded with James and Sarah Mason. While there, he emancipated his ten slaves.
After the death of her husband in 1834, widow Sarah Mason, along with her brother-in-law Paris Mason, assumed the responsibility for platting the town of Grafton which her husband James is credited with founding. She named the town Grafton in honor of her husband's birth place. In a History of Jersey County, IL, it's reported that the town was named Grafton after the town in Massachusetts where James Mason originally lived.
Mrs. Mason lived with her daughter, Mrs. William H. Allen, and family from 1850 through 1860. She died in Grafton at the Allen home Sept. 18, 1867.
