Abel or Abell Fisher was born in Mountmellick or Mount Mellick (not Mt. Mellick), Ireland, the son of Abel Fisher. He had a brother, Henry Fisher, and a half-sister, Nancy Lake. According to family records, he spent some time as a dragoon in the British Army. He married Rachel Hoowe or Hoowee (as spelled in family bible) on Feb 27, 1750 in Ireland. She may have been born about 1732, the daughter of Mathias Howee.

After the marriage, the family emigrated to America, landing at Philadelphia, Philadelphia. They settled at Cape May, New Jersey where Abel Fisher used a small boat to transport oysters to Philadelphia and bringing back domestic goods.

In 1773, they moved west. After an arduous journal, their team of horses gave out at Fort Ligonier, Pennsylvania, where Abel decided to purchase 300-acres, two miles west of Ligonier on Two Mile Run.

During the American Revolution, the family retreated to York, Pennsylania, due to Indian attacks. After the war, they returned to Westmoreland County.

He married Rachel Hoowe or Hoowee (as spelled in family bible) on Feb 27, 1750 in Ireland. Their children were:
