Johannes immigrated from Flåm, Norway to Koshkonong, Wisconsin in 1849. Moving further west, he settled in Black Hammer and married Mari Otterness. Eight children were born to this family. The Berkvam-Otterness farm in Norway was purchased by the Flåm community to be a museum. The houses were in good condition back in the 1980's and contained hand made furniture dating back to 1826-1846 made by Ole Otterness.
